Last Full Day in Kenya

Started today with a long run - extra long, as we managed to get ourselves lost around Johnstone's neighbourhood!  It was a good one though!!  Then an extra workout doing laundry - African style!!  Good for our character, and it makes one appreciate a washing machine!

Then off to church in Muthare North at Living Word - a fantastic service spent with all our friends!
Afterwards we met with a number of our students attending secondary who were able to make their way to us.  More stories of students enjoying secondary and doing well in their studies!  Some of the students have been with us from the start, and now they are taller than us!!  What a great group of young men and women!

Rachael with Dennis Ngazi, Claire - Rachael has some great updates for you!

Carolyn with Brian Issiah and his mother. Brian has been with us since early primary - when he was much shorter than Carolyn! Now he is in his final year of secondary school.
We came back to Johnstone's place in the afternoon and had a board meeting.  Great conversation!  Everyone seems very pleased with how the students are doing. There is a steady increase in results for the National exam at the end of grade 8 - this year's class should be no exception.
There was some serious conversation at the board meeting about cost of living increases due to inflation. Rising oil prices are causing significant increases in other necessary products making the struggle for parents to find fees for students an even greater concern. This is also putting a strain on the school. We discussed ways to combat these issues and hope to come up with a plan which may involve increasing class sizes.
The Tumaini teachers and board members were very pleased to receive money to purchase new textbooks. We were able to secure this funding from a generous donation by the Legacy Foundation in Edmonton.

The rest of this evening will be spent trying to repack our luggage in preparation for an early AM departure for Rwanda. We will chat with you all again from Kigeme, Rwanda.

Looks like you are having a very productive trip. With all the comments regarding the food, Kenya & Rwanda pavillions will be at the top of my list to visit over the long weekend at Heritage Days here in Edm. Want to try out their cuisine...will let you know what I sampled.
