Shopping Day

8/3/2013

Today was a long day!!  Mostly shopping.  Between yesterday shopping from the Tumaini Bead Craft Ladies and today, we are bringing back some great stuff so keep your eyes and ears open!!

First thing this morning we went to the Kazuri Bead Factory.  We were given a tour to learn about the process from 'dirt' to the finished product.  Very interesting!! There are over 350 ladies employed in the factory. The purpose of the factory is to employ single women living in poverty to help raise their standard of life. They are paid well plus they are provided with medical care for them and their families. Kazuri is famous around the world and exports a lot of their product- including to Canada!!  Even Meryl Streep has been seen to adorn the beadwork!

The afternoon was the Masai Market which continues to be a test of all kinds of things:  negotiation skills, humility, patience, alertness to swindling and sensitivity to personal space.  We also spent a lot of time laughing!

In between these two shopping excursions we went to the Nairobi Animal orphanage to see a great number of wild animals that were rescued when very young.  There were lots of lions which were fun to watch - especially seeing the cubs playing.  A couple interesting facts we learned that we can pass on to you:  A lion's roar can be heard up to five miles away!!  Also - a hyena is a hermaphrodite  (a he/she or a push me-pull you)!!  It's all true!
